In 1983, Deere introduced the 4050, 4250, 4450, 4650, and 4850. These tractors were essentially the same machines as the Iron Horses they replaced, but with significant upgrades. They offered a new 15-speed Power Shift transmission, and were available with optional mechanical front-wheel drive featuring caster action for better traction and a tighter turning radius. They also featured cosmetic upgrades, including a new light brown cab interior, not the black interior on previous models. These tractors were followed by the mechanically similar 55 and 60 series tractors before they were replaced by the Deere’s completely redesigned 7000 and 8000 series tractors in the early 1990s.

The calculator shows a comparison between the Tier 4A/Stage IIIB and previous engine emissions regulations.[46]

In 1843, Deere partnered with Leonard Andrus to produce more plows to keep up with demand. However, the partnership became strained due to the two men’s stubbornness – while Deere wished to sell to customers outside Grand Detour, Andrus opposed a proposed railroad through Grand Detour – and Deere’s distrust of Andrus’ accounting practices.[8] In 1848, Deere dissolved the partnership with Andrus and moved to Moline, Illinois, because the city was a transportation hub on the Mississippi River.[9] By 1855, Deere’s factory sold more than 10,000 such plows. It became known as “The Plow that Broke the Plains” and is commemorated as such in a historic place marker in Vermont.[10]

The company produced its first combine harvester, the John Deere No. 2, in 1927. A year later, this innovation was followed up by the introduction of John Deere No. 1, a smaller machine that was more popular with customers. By 1929, the No. 1 and No. 2 were replaced by newer, lighter-weight harvesters. In the 1930s, John Deere and other farm equipment manufacturers began developing hillside harvesting technology. Harvesters now had the ability to effectively use their combines to harvest grain on hillsides with up to a 50% slope gradient.[8]
Row Crop: Row crop tractors are designed to optimize workflow. They have horsepowers between 140 and 400, and they’re equipped to do everything from snow removal to manure hauling. They are ideal for both commercial farming and municipal applications. John Deere makes 6-series, 7-series, and 8-series row crop tractors.
Besides the new tractor models, sellers on eBay have an incredible selection of vintage and antique farm and construction equipment from brands such as Farmall and Allis-Chalmers. These classic work engines have a history and character that makes them very appealing, especially if you want the challenge of restoring them to their former glory. Despite their museum-worthy appearance, they are more than attractive collectibles: These older tractors are a great choice for small businesses, as they are relatively inexpensive, simple to operate, and still pack enough power to get the job done.

Scythes were the world’s primary grass- or shrub-cutting tools until farm-equipment mechanization moved in. According to Penn State University, the scythe is again gaining in popularity among small-scale farmers. One swing of a scythe can cut a swath 6 feet long by 4 inches wide—not exactly the efficiency of using a mower, but maybe it’s not a piece of farm equipment that should be completely ruled out.

Located under the header floor, the edge of the uncut crop is protected from potential snagging caused by bulky side-mounted knife drive gearboxes.[63]
For applying compost tea, pesticides or herbicides (organic or synthetic), a sprayer is a necessary piece of farm equipment. Backpack-sized sprayers and walk-behind sprayers are hand operated, while farmers with several acres of crops will want a tractor- or ATV-mounted and operated sprayer.
